What problems do flat roofs have on the prairies?
Flat roofs do not shed water and snow the way a pitched roof does, so small problems can grow quickly.
- Ponding water. Low spots hold water, which strains the membrane and finds weak seams.
- Freeze and thaw. Water gets into small cracks, freezes and widens them, repeating through the winter.
- Snow load. Heavy or drifted snow adds weight, especially near parapets and rooftop units.
- Blocked drains. Ice and debris stop water leaving the roof.
- Seam and flashing failure. Movement from temperature swings pulls details apart.
- Wind and hail. Open, exposed buildings take the full force of prairie storms.
After a major storm, see our storm and hail damage page. Regular checks before winter and after spring thaw catch many issues early.
