Open exposure, snow loads and long runs of roof
Acreages in this area are open and exposed. Wind loads on tall, flat gable ends can be significant, and long ridge lines need strong fastening. Hail crosses open land easily and can dent steel and bruise shingles alike.
Long roof slopes collect a lot of snow, which can slide as one mass. Eaves above doors, parking spots and animal pens deserve extra thought. Where snow stays on the roof for weeks, ice can build up at the eaves. Gutters and downspouts are exposed to both wind and sliding snow, and they are often the first thing to be bent or ripped away.
